Pioneering the Future of Technical Documentation: A Conversation with Dr. Harald Stadlbauer

In an era defined by rapid digital transformation and the relentless march of artificial intelligence, true leadership is not merely about adopting new technology – it is about reshaping the very fabric of an industry. At the helm of the NINEFEB group, Dr. Harald Stadlbauer stands as a testament to this philosophy. With a career that spans robotics, global telecommunications, and corporate venturing, Dr. Stadlbauer brings a uniquely multidisciplinary lens to the often-overlooked but critical field of Technical Documentation.

In this exclusive interview, we explore his remarkable journey, his vision for the future, and the groundbreaking methodologies that are positioning NINEFEB as a true industry leader.

A Journey Forged in Complexity

Dr. Stadlbauer’s career trajectory is anything but linear. Beginning with a Computer Science degree in the early days of the discipline, he cut his teeth as a programmer in robotics – a foundation that instilled in him a deep respect for precision and systems thinking. His path soon took him to SONY Europe, where he navigated the intricate world of product-related environmental issues, eventually establishing a standards committee within ECMA to align major competitors like Philips, Siemens, and Apple.

“Private reasons forced me back to Vienna” he recalls, “where I took on the role of a Resource and Quality Manager at Cap Gemini.” However, it was his foray into the telecommunications sector that truly defined his executive acumen. As a Project Manager for the market entry of T-Online in Austria, he built an online infrastructure provider from the ground up in just three months. This agility caught the attention of T-Mobile, where he rose to Executive Director for New Business Development and later Vice President for Partner Management and Corporate Venturing.

In 2012, a management buyout opportunity led to the formation of the NINEFEB group, solidifying his transition from corporate titan to entrepreneurial visionary.

Milestones of Impact

When asked about his most significant accomplishment, Dr. Stadlbauer points not to a single project, but to a period of intense personal and professional growth. “Becoming Executive Director for New Business Development in T-Mobile Austria and then Vice President of T-Mobile International were the most challenging steps” he admits. “I felt like being thrown into the air without any parachute.”

Yet, it was in this freefall that he discovered his greatest strength: the ability to define his own path. His success in setting up one of the first mobile payment systems and lottery platforms in Austria proved that when leadership is combined with courage, the results are revolutionary.

Navigating the Looming Crisis with AI

While the world buzzes about the potential of Generative AI, Dr. Stadlbauer offers a sobering and strategic perspective on its application in safety-critical industries. He identifies a “Silver Tsunami” – the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation – as a primary catalyst for change.

“Consider the case that a company loses at least 40% of its skilled staff” he warns. “Standard training procedures fail because everyone is in training, and daily work cannot be covered.”

This is where NINEFEB diverges from the hype. Understanding that AI’s current accuracy is insufficient for heavily regulated, safety-critical environments, Dr. Stadlbauer’s team took a rigorous, scientific approach. “We tested AI and RAG for safety-critical content, asking the same questions 25 times. We reached an accuracy of just 23 to 35%” he reveals.

Rather than abandoning AI, NINEFEB innovated. By developing a standards-based GraphRAG approach with a rigorous documentation structure, they are achieving near-perfect accuracy. This is complemented by their proprietary iNEED® and iLEARN methods, which seamlessly derive e-learning from technical documentation, ensuring consistency and massive productivity gains.

“Our role is to test and develop working solutions” he states firmly. “We don’t provide ‘standard food’ – we provide the most suitable, adapted solution to solve our customers’ problems.”

Advice for the Next Generation

For aspiring leaders looking to make a mark, Dr. Stadlbauer’s counsel is as pragmatic as it is inspirational. He lives by the motto: “If we are forced to go down and bend our knees, we only do that to get a running start.”

Channeling his admiration for Arnold Schwarzenegger, he adds a simple but powerful imperative: “Be useful.”

This philosophy permeates the NINEFEB mission. In a world of noise and hyperbole, Dr. Stadlbauer is focused on creating tangible, measurable added value. His journey from robotics to the boardroom, and now to the forefront of AI-driven documentation, serves as a powerful reminder that true industry leaders are defined not by the technologies they use, but by the problems they solve and the value they create.
